BlueMark and R&I Launch Company ID, a New Impact Rating for Companies

October 22, 2026

BlueMark has partnered with R&I, Japan’s leading credit rating agency, to launch Company ID: an assessment of impact accountability for companies that operate businesses intended to create impact.

In June, BlueMark and Rating and Investment Information, Inc. (R&I) launched Instrument ID, an impact accountability assessment for the lending products of Japanese financial institutions. Instrument ID, like BlueMark’s Fund ID™, assesses the impact credentials of investors; with the Company ID, BlueMark and R&I are turning to the companies that receive impact capital and are ultimately responsible for delivering impact.

Impact investment and finance assets in Japan reached ¥27 trillion as of March 2026, according to the Japan Impact-Driven Financing Initiative. As that capital grows, investors and lenders need a consistent way to judge whether the companies they finance can deliver on their impact claims. That judgment is difficult because impact businesses often take years to contribute to profit, which makes them hard to capture in conventional valuation or credit analysis.

Built on the Fund ID™ methodology, Company ID assesses companies across four pillars: Strategy, Governance, Management, and Reporting. Each company will receive a rating for these four pillars, which will roll up to an overall rating ranging from Bronze to Platinum. Company ID rates the strength of a company’s impact practices rather than the scale of its impact, and applies equally to startups and to large, listed companies with impactful lines of business alongside other operations.

R&I is now recruiting companies for the first phase of a pilot, with applications open from November 2 to December 25, 2026, assessments in early 2027, and results published in May 2027. Pilot assessments are offered at half the standard price. Interested companies can contact R&I at [email protected], and the full criteria and methodology are available on R&I’s website.

With Fund ID™, Instrument ID, and now Company ID, BlueMark and R&I can assess impact accountability across the full chain of impact capital, from funds and financial institutions to the companies they finance. Our goal is credible, comparable information that helps long-term capital reach the businesses best positioned to deliver impact.
